Valtra approves 100% biodiesel (B100) for use in all engines, including Common Rail Engines

11.11.2007

Up until now, Valtra has approved B100 biodiesel for use in all Tier 0, Tier 1 and Tier 2 engines as well as Tier 3 engines in the sub-75kW category that are fitted with rotary pumps. Biodiesel use in Common Rail Engines has so far been limited to a level of 20% of total fuel (B20).

Valtra and their engine manufacturer, Sisu Diesel, have now completed extensive testing of biodiesel in Common Rail Engines. The tests have been successful and SisuDiesel Common Rail Engines are now fully approved to run with 100% Biodiesel (B100).

The biodiesel fuel must comply with EN 14214 or ASTM D 6751 standards. The biodiesel used in Europe is typically rape methyl ester (RME), whereas in North America soy methyl ester (SOME) is generally used. Other plant oils can also be used to produce biodiesel. The biodiesel fuel must be esterified. Non-esterified, cold-pressed or other biodiesel fuel that does not conform to the above standards must not be used.

Sisu Diesel’s engines do not need to be modified before using biodiesel. However, when biodiesel is used in any Sisu Diesel (or Valmet) engine, the engine oil, oil filter and fuel filter must be changed twice as often as required by the normal service interval. In addition, for Common Rail Engines, an additional pre-filter is required and this must be fitted between the fuel tank and the engine. These extra-filter kits will be available from the beginning of 2008.
